The main objective of this course is to educate and train theories and application of land surface modeling in the framework of the Norwegian Earth System Model to increase the use of climate modeling in terrestrial sciences research and to train the next generation land surface modelers. The course will focus on addressing:
1) the understanding and modelling of processes controlling fluxes of water and energy at the boundary between the land surface and the atmosphere, and
2) the interaction between biogeophysics and biogeochemistry in terrestrial systems and modeling these processes in land surface modeling.
The students will gain experience in conducting site-level simulations and model experiments to understand structure and function of the Community Land Model.

Morning lectures will address theoretical basis of land surface modeling. The lectures will focus on biogeophysics and biogeochemistry to strengthen the students’ knowledge in functioning of land surface modeling in Earth System Model framework.
Day 1&2: lectures on biogeophysics focused on water and energy balance and fluxes
Day 3&4: lectures on biogeochemistry focused on carbon and nitrogen cycling
Day 4&5: lectures on Community Land Model and NorESM, model structure and functioning
The lab sessions will focus on practical use of the model. The students will prepare tentative research questions they want to answer using the model. During the lab, the students will conduct some of the model simulation experiments (site-simulations). On the afternoon of Day5, the students will present their model results and findings to discuss future application.
